contrasts in modernity . holzhausen was inspired by childhood memories of stacked wood elements in the Black Forest of Germany.

the geometry and footprint of the circular form makes a sculptural impact on the landscape, calling attention to the object while acknowledging that in its construction it is lesser than that from which it is derived. the scale and keystone construction method simultaneously reduce the former tree to something more mundane while celebrating what remains with a form that requires consideration for how each element interlocks and nests and rests with its adjacent partners.

the exercise of constructing contrasts in modernity . holzhausen was an opportunity to honor and commune with this giving tree—its pieces will provide fuel for heat and be used as elements for an upcoming installation—and to further my exploration and understanding of the qualities of wood impacted by climate change, infestation, and disease.
